Bydureon is a once-weekly, extended-release injection medication that is used to help control blood-sugar levels in adults with type-2 diabetes. Unfortunately, the active drug in Bydureon, exenatide, has been linked to a concerning number of case reports and studies suggesting a possible risk of pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, and thyroid cancer.

Bydureon and Thyroid Cancer
Bydureon is a diabetes drug that is sold by AstaZeneca and Bristol-Myers Squibb. It is the extended-release version of Byetta (exenatide). When the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Bydureon in January 2012, they required the following Black Box warning about thyroid cancer:
“Exenatide extended-release causes thyroid C-cell tumors at clinically relevant exposures in rats. It is unknown whether Bydureon causes thyroid C-cell tumors, including medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), in humans.”
Bydureon and Pancreatic Cancer
The exenatide in Bydureon has also been linked to a possible risk of pancreatic cancer. Bydureon works by stimulating the pancreas to produce more insulin, which may have adverse effects, such as inflammation, cell proliferation, and the growth of tumors.
In 2010, a team from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) analyzed data from 2004-2009 in the FDA adverse event database. In a study published in Gastroenterology, they found that the odds of pancreatitis increased 6- to 10-fold, and the odds of pancreatic cancer increased nearly 3-fold.

About Class Action Lawsuits
In a class action lawsuit, many individual plaintiffs consolidate their claims into one claim. The entire group is represented by a “class representative.” If the lawsuit goes to trial, the outcome depends on the strengths or weaknesses of the representative’s case. If the outcome is not good, other members of the class action may be forced to accept a “low ball settlement” and high attorneys’ fees. Even if compensation is awarded, it must be shared with other members of the class action.
Why Our Law Firm Is Filing Individual Lawsuits as Opposed to a Bydureon Class Action Lawsuit
Although Schmidt & Clark, LLP is nationally recognized as a class action law firm, we are not pursuing justice for our clients through a Bydureon class action lawsuit. Instead, we are filing individual claims. In 2008, Michael E. Schmidt filed the first-ever Byetta lawsuit in the United States on behalf of a man from Virginia. Bydureon is very similar to Byetta — both drugs contain the same active ingredient, exenatide, which has been linked to cancer.
Cancer is a devastating disease, and many of our clients have suffered substantial physical, emotional, and financial losses. This is why we work on contingency-fee agreements — our clients pay nothing unless we win a favorable outcome in their case.
You could receive compensation for:
- Pain and suffering
- Medical expenses
- Lost income or out-of-pocket costs
- Disability, decreased quality of life
- Wrongful death
- Punitive damages
